How to Read an Event Viewer System Error

1. Click on 'Start' or the Windows orb logo on the taskbar at the bottom of the desktop to show the Start menu. Select 'Run' from the menu to open a dialog box. Type 'eventvwr' and then click the 'OK' button to open the 'Event Viewer' dialog window.
2. Click on 'Application' in the left pane. For later Windows operating systems you may need to click on the 'Windows Logs' folder to see the 'Application' option.
3. Click on 'View' at the top and then click 'Filter' from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, right-click on 'Application' and then select 'Filter Current Log' option.
4. Click the down arrow next to 'Event Source' to see the drop-down menu and then choose one of the following: 'Save Dump,' 'System Error' or 'Windows Error Reporting.'
5. Move the cursor down to the 'Event ID' (or 'All Event IDs') field and type in '1001.' Click the 'OK' button.
6. Write down the event and corresponding bugcheck code, e.g., '0x000000D1' or '0x0000008E.' Use a search engine to find more information about the meaning of the code.
