How to Fix an Invalid Boot INI File

1. Put your Windows XP disk into your disk drive and reboot the computer.
2. Set the BIOS in your computer to boot from CD. Many computers have one-time boot menus to select a boot device. On most computers, hit a function key or the 'Delete' key. The specific key should be displayed on the start-up screen before the operating system attempts to load. If you do not have a one-time boot menu, you will need to access the BIOS setup. Change the boot order so that your CD drive is the first boot device. Consult the manufacturer of your motherboard for exact instructions on how to access the BIOS.
3. Choose to repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console from the setup welcome screen. Press 'R.'
4. Select the installation you need to repair. Most computers have one installation. Make the selection by inputting the digit to the left on the list of Windows installations. Enter the administrator password for your Windows installation when prompted.
5. Enter the command 'bootcfg /rebuild' at the command prompt when it appears. If your administrator password was correct, then a line will be added reading 'C:\WINDOWS>.' The drive letter may be different on your computer. Your computer will be scanned for Windows installations.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen. You will receive several messages. Answer 'yes' when asked to add a discovered installation to the boot list.
7. Enter the name of your operating system when asked to 'Enter Load Identifier'. Depending on your version of XP, this will be either 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional' or 'Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.'
8. Enter the command '/fastdetect' when prompted to 'Enter OS Load options.' Type 'exit' to leave the Recovery console and reboot. The boot.ini should be repaired. You may have to select your operating system during the reboot.
