How to Remove Items From Windows XP System Configuration Startup


Disable Items
1. Click the Windows XP 'Start' menu, and then click 'Run.' Type 'MSconfig' and click 'OK' to open the System Configuration screen.
2. Click 'Startup' from the window's available tabs.
3. Click to deselect the entries you wish to disable, and ultimately remove from the list.
4. Click 'OK' to exit, ignoring Windows XP's request to restart your computer.
Remove Items
5. Go to 'Start,' type ''Regedit' into the 'Run' window and click 'OK.'
6. Navigate to the following set of directories: 'HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig.'
7. Expand the 'MSConfig' directory to reveal two sub-folders: 'Startupfolder' and 'Startupreg.' These two locations contain additional folders inside, each pertaining to the items previously unchecked (disabled) from the System Configuration utility. Such folders are named after the application entry you wish to remove from the list.
8. Delete all folders pertaining to the entries in question to effectively remove them from the System Configuration utility's list.
9. Exit the Windows XP registry.
