How to Repair Windows Explorer From Shutting Down With a Right Mouse Click
Disable Visual Effects in Windows XP
1. Click the 'Start' button and click 'Control Panel' in the Start Menu.
2. Select the 'Performance and Maintenance' section from the Control Panel. Click 'System.'
3. Select the 'Advanced' tab in the 'System Properties' box. Click 'Settings' in the 'Performance' section. Select the 'Visual Effects' tab. Click the 'Fade or slide menus into view' check box to clear the check mark. Click 'OK.' Click 'OK' in the 'System Properties' box to close it. Close the Control Panel.
4. Right-click anywhere on the desktop (where the background is displayed) and select 'Properties' to open the 'Display Properties' dialog box.
5. Select the 'Appearance' tab in the Display Properties box. Click the button labeled 'Effects.' Click the 'Use the following transition effect for menus and tooltips' box to clear the check mark and remove this setting. Click 'OK' and then 'OK' again to close Display Properties.
Disable Right-Click Menu Options
6. Download a freeware program that can help you manage your Windows 'shell extensions,' which are programs that give Windows Explorer added functions by placing options in the right-click options menu. Examples of these freeware programs include ShellExView by NirSoft, Glary Utilities by Glarysoft and FileMenu Tools by Lopesoft. Find this type of shell extension manager on computer and software Websites such as Softpedia, PCMag.com and PC World. Select a shell extension manager program, download it and install it on your computer.
7. Open the shell extension manager program. Identify the non-Microsoft, right-click menu options--often called 'context menu' handlers or items. Examples of non-Microsoft menu options include third-party ZIP options, encryption utilities and anti-virus program functions.
8. Click the checkbox next to each program's context menu option that you want to disable. Disable one context menu option first. Then, open Windows Explorer and right-click a file, folder or directory that typically causes Explorer to shut down. Re-enable the right-click menu option if you determine that the one you unchecked did not cause the problem. Continue this trial-and-error approach until you have identified and disabled the faulty menu option.
