How to Install Windows XP Over Windows Me


Upgrade to Windows XP
1. Perform an upgrade to Windows XP from Windows ME. Insert the upgrade CD into the drive and click the 'Install Windows' option to start the Setup Wizard.
2. Select 'Upgrade' as the installation type and then click 'Next' to continue. Continue through the Setup Wizard by following the instructions displayed to install Windows XP.
3. Get updates to the operating system after the installation has completed. Microsoft Update (see Resources) can be used to download and install all current updates that are available for Windows XP.
Full Install of Windows XP
4. Perform a full installation of Windows XP over the installation of Windows ME. Insert the Windows XP installation disk into the drive and restart the computer to display the Windows Setup screen.
5. Press the 'Enter' key to begin the installation of Windows XP. Read through the License Agreement and press the 'F8' key to continue.
6. Select and format a partition to use for Windows XP. The default partition will be displayed with the letter 'C.' Choose this partition to use for the installation of Windows XP.
7. Select the file system to use for the Windows XP operating system. Windows XP can use a FAT32 as well as an NTFS file system. Choose the type of file system that is preferred and press the Enter key to begin copying the operating system files. The computer will then restart to complete the installation of Windows XP.
8. Check Windows Update (see Resources) and download all available updates after the installation has completed.
