How to Fix a Toshiba Laptop I/O Error
Hard Drive
1. Shut down the TOSHIBA laptop, remove the AC adapter, and put on an antistatic wristband or touch an unpainted metal surface.
2. Close the LCD panel and turn the computer over. Slide the tabs on the bottom to unlock and remove the battery.
3. Find the hard drive, located near the front of the TOSHIBA laptop. Remove the screws securing the hard drive cover. Loosen and remove the screws that secure the hard drive cage to the laptop base.
4. Slide the hard drive to the left and pull it out of the computer. Check the connectors in the laptop and on the side of the hard drive for cracks, which indicate irreparable damage.
5. Insert the hard drive back into the computer if the connectors are intact. Make sure the hard drive is inserted fully, then reassemble and turn on the laptop. If the I/O error still occurs, restart the computer and move to the next step.
6. Press 'F8' on the boot screen to go to Windows Advanced Boot Options. Use the arrow pad to highlight 'Repair Your Computer.' Press 'Enter' or wait for the timer to reach '0.'
7. Select an administrator account and input the password, if applicable. Follow the onscreen instructions until you reach the 'System Recovery Options' window.
8. Click 'Command Prompt.' Input 'diskpart' and press 'Enter' to run DiskPart. Type 'listdisk' and press 'Enter.' Type 'list disk' and press 'Enter.' On most TOSHIBA laptops, the only disk listed will be 'Disk 0.'
9. Type 'select disk

' with the number assigned to the system disk. Press 'Enter.' Type 'detail disk' to see the letter assigned to the system volume.
10. Type 'exit' and press 'Enter' to quit DiskPart. Type 'chkdsk

' with the letter assigned to the system volume. Press 'Enter' to repair bad sectors on the hard drive.
11. Type 'bootrec.exe' into the Command Prompt when CheckDisk is complete. Press 'Enter' to run Bootrec. Type 'bootrec /rebuildbcd,' then press 'Enter' to rebuild the BCD and fix the I/O error on the TOSHIBA laptop.
DVD Drive
12. Disconnect the AC adapter, close the LCD panel and turn the notebook over. Put on an antistatic wrist band or touch an unpainted metal surface.
13. Release the battery lock, then slide the tab to eject the battery from its compartment. Remove the battery from the TOSHIBA laptop. Locate the DVD drive. Pull on the edge of the drive. If the drive slides out of the laptop, the DVD drive has come loose from the computer.
14. Push the drive all the way into the laptop until you meet resistance. Locate the drive screw, usually found to the left of the serial tag. Tighten the screw in place. If the screw is missing, purchase a replacement screw. Most TOSHIBA models use a flathead 4-mm-long screw for the DVD drive.
15. Reassemble the computer and boot into Windows. Click 'Start.' Click 'Computer' or 'My Computer.' Insert a disc and double-click the DVD drive to run the contents.
16. Right-click the DVD drive if you get another I/O error. Click 'Properties' and 'Hardware.' Select the DVD drive, then click 'Properties' again. Check the 'Device Status' field to see if an error code is listed. Follow the directions on the 'General' tab to resolve the error.
