Understanding the 0x0000007b Error
0x0000007b is an error code for the 'Inaccessible Boot Device' STOP error in the Windows XP operating system. STOP errors are fatal malfunctions that prompt Windows to completely cease all processor activity and shut down the system to prevent physical damage to it. The 'inaccessible boot device' error is a general error covering hard drive problems. The error could be triggered by anything from a boot-sector virus to a malfunctioning hard drive.
Software Repairs to Fix the 0x0000007b Error
In the event of a 0x0000007b error, first reboot the PC and load Windows in safe mode by press f8 before the Windows XP logo appears and select 'Start in Safe Mode.' If the error does not occur, immediately back up important files and data and perform a repair with the recovery console. If the operating system fails to load, perform a repair with the recovery console.To perform a operating system repair with the recovery console, insert the Windows XP CD and reboot the computer. When the 'Press any key to run setup' prompt appears, press a key on the keyboard. Press the 'R' key to start the recovery console. You will be prompted for the administrator's password. If you do not have one, simply press enter. Once the console is loaded, type 'chkdsk /f /r' without the quotation marks. The recovery console will attempt to repair your operating system, including the boot sector. After the recovery console is done, it will give a report on all errors fixed.Reboot your PC and see if the computer will boot into Windows XP. If Windows XP still fails to load, you may need to format your computer and re-install Windows.
