The processor -- or central processing unit -- of the HP Compaq nw8440 was an Intel Core Duo or its immediate predecessor, the Intel Core 2 Duo. The 'Duo' suffix stands for their status as dual-core processors, which means that they consist of two processing units. There were seven Intel Core and Core 2 Duo chips available for the nw8440, with a processing speed range of 1.83 gigahertz to 2.33 GHz. All CPUs, however, connected to the computer's motherboard via the front-side bus for data transfer at a rate of 667 megahertz.
