How to Fix Windows XP Using a Different Computer


1. Verify that the host computer is running Windows XP Professional, as Windows XP Home does not support Remote Desktop. The remote computer must be running Windows 95 or higher.
2. Sign in as the administrator on the host computer.
3. Click on the 'Start' menu. Select 'Control Panel' from the right side of the menu. Choose the 'Performance and Maintenance' option.
4. Select 'System,' located at the bottom of the screen. Select the 'Remote' tab, and click on the box labeled 'Allow users to connect remotely to this computer.' Select 'OK.'
5. Select 'Firewall' in the 'Control Panel' menu. Select 'Windows Firewall' at the bottom of the screen. Verify the 'Don't allow exceptions' is unchecked. Select 'Exceptions' tab and click on the box labeled 'Remote Desktop.' Click on 'OK.'
6. Select the 'Performance and Maintenance' in the 'Control Panel' screen. Select 'System' and click on the 'Computer Name' tab. This will be the name you use to remotely connect to this PC.
7. Click on the 'Start' menu on the computer you will be using to connect to the host. Select 'All Programs' from the bottom of the menu, and choose 'Accessories' from the menu that will appear. Select 'Communications' and then 'Remote Desktop Connection.'
8. Enter the name of the host computer in the 'Computer:' field. Select 'Connect.'
9. Enter the user name, password and domain of the host computer. Select 'OK.'
