How to Fix HTTP Error Code 404
1. Check your URL. If you typed the URL wrong, you will get Error Code 404. Even a single letter or number in the URL can make a difference.
2. Troubleshoot error 404 by moving backward along the path of the requested URL. It is an effective method especially when you are trying to open a page of a website that doesn't exist anymore or is temporarily down. In other words, that specific Web page may be down, but the website may be fully functional. If your requested URL is 'http://www.website.com/webpage/page,' for example, delete 'page' and simply type 'http://www.website.com/webpage.' If you still get an error message, delete the next portion of the URL backward and simply type 'http://www.website.com' and so on. Continue this process until you see a website.
3. Change the URL extension. If your requested URL ends with 'html,' try 'htm' instead and vice versa.
4. Open the URL at a later time. You will get a 404 error code if you are trying to open a Web page that is temporarily down for updates or site maintenance.
5. Report the error to the webmaster if none of the above techniques work. Chances are the website has changed its URL. Perform a Google search for the website you are trying to open to find the new URL.
