How To Change the Computer Name Created with Windows XP Installation
1. Log in to Windows XP as an 'Administrator' or temporarily use an administrator's account.
2. Access the 'System' tool. Click on the Windows Start button located at the bottom on the taskbar, to bring up the Start Menu. Click on the 'Control Panel' link. Then click on the 'System' link to bring up the System Properties dialog box. Alternatively, click 'Run' on the Start Menu, and type 'sysdm.cpl' in the field labeled 'Open.' Click 'OK.'
3. Change the computer's name. Click the 'Computer Name' tab to the front in the properties dialog box. Click on the 'Change' button, revealing another smaller pop-up dialog box labeled, 'Computer Name Changes.' Type over the existing 'Computer name:' with the new computer name, then click the 'OK' button. Please note that the computer name can be no longer than 15 characters, no 'spaces,' and no special characters ( ; : '
* + = \ | ? , ).
4. Click 'OK' to confirm your changes and prepare to restart your computer.
