How to Make a Computer a Router on Windows Vista
Creating a Wireless Network
1. Open the Network Setup Wizard. If you are using the standard start menu style, click the Start button, click 'Connect To,' then click 'Set up a connection or network.' If you are using the classic start menu style, click the Start button, click Settings, click Control Panel, open the Network and Sharing Center, then click 'Set up a connection or network.'
2. Select 'Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network' in the menu and click Next.
3. Click Next to begin defining your wireless network's parameters.
4. Fill in the network name and security type and enter a password if you choose to use authentication. Check the box for 'Save this network' if you plan to use the network for an extended period of time. Click Next when all network parameters are set.
5. Click 'Turn on Internet connection sharing' if your computer has an Internet connection you wish to share with users of your wireless network.
Creating a Wired Network
6. Connect each of your computer's network adapters to other computers or routers via LAN cable. Note your computer will need to have a separate network adapter for each connection.
7. Open Network Connections on the computer that is to be the server. If you are using the modern start menu style, click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Classic View (in the left-hand column), open the Network and Sharing Center and then click Manage Network Connections in the left-hand column. If you are using the classic start menu style, simply click Start, click Settings and click Network Connections.
8. Select all of the connections you want to network together by holding the Ctrl button and clicking each one.
9. Right-click any of the connections after all are selected and choose 'Bridge Connections' in the context menu. If you are prompted for administrator approval, enter your administrator password or provide confirmation.
10. Share Internet access with the network, if you desire. Right-click your Internet connection, choose Properties from the context menu, select the Sharing tab and check the box for 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection.' If there is a drop-down box below this, choose 'Network Bridge.' Click OK.
