Windows Media Player Won't Play MID
1. Attempt to the play the MID file in another media player. If the file will play in another player but still won't play in Windows Media Player, download and install the latest version of Windows Media Player (see 'Resources').
2. Download and install a free copy of Microsoft's audio playback diagnostics wizard if the file still doesn't play after upgrading Windows Media Player (see 'Resources'). Run the wizard to locate any issues that may be affecting midi playback.
3. Upgrade your sound drivers with the most up-to-date drivers on your sound card manufacturer's support site, if the wizard doesn't find any problems.
4. Launch the Device Manager to find out about your sound card's manufacturer: Click on the 'Start' button, click on the 'Control Panel' option, click on the 'System' icon and then select the 'Device Manager' option. Click on the 'Sound Video and Game Controllers' option in the Device Manager.
5. Edit the MID value data in your computer's registry if you still can't play MID files and the problem occurred just after uninstalling a program that used midi. Click on the 'Start' button and then type 'regedit' into the search or 'Run' box to launch the Registry Editor.
6. Click on the 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT' key in the window to the left and then select the '.mid' subkey. Double-click on the 'Content Type' option in the window to the right. Type 'audio/mid' into the 'Value Data' field in the menu that appears. Click 'OK.'
7. Click on the '.midi' key in the window to the left and set its value data to 'audio/mid' as well. Exit the Registry Editor.
