Microsoft Windows Paint Errors

MS Office 97
After installing Office 97 on Windows 95 or NT, users opening certain file types in Paint have encountered this error message: 'This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.' The resolution is to download the Paint executable from Microsoft and then move that file and certain '.dll' files to specified locations.
Not Enough Memory
Windows 95, 98 or ME may display this when opening Paint or when opening a bitmap file in Paint: 'Not enough memory or resources. Close some programs and try again.' You can resolve the former issue by closing programs so Paint does open and lowering Paint's default image size. There is no resolution to the latter problem; you must use another program.
Height or Width Changes
Windows 98 may display this when changing height or width in the 'Attributes' window: 'Out of memory.' The maximum allowed values are based on individual system capabilities. You should try a lower height or width value that your computer can handle.
Invalid Page Fault
Windows NT or 98 may display this when you open Paint or when you use Paint's text utility: 'Mspaint caused an invalid page fault in module Mspaint.exe at 015f:010259e2.' You can resolve this by deleting this registry key: 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint.' You edit the registry at your own risk; registry mistakes can cause severe system problems.
Viruses
In any version of Windows, a virus can cause file corruption, which could lead to nearly any type of error in Paint or other programs. Try running a full virus scan from a quality virus-protection program.
