How to Fix the Sound on an HP Pavilion Laptop
1. Make sure your sound is turned on. Sometimes accidentally hitting the wrong key command can mute sound. Open your audio-device center and make sure your speakers are turned on, and that the sound on any video or music programs you are running is turned up.
2. Check to see if your audio drivers are functioning properly. Click 'Start,' 'Control Panel,' 'Administrative tools,' 'Computer management' and then 'Device manager.' In the manager, find 'Sound, video and game controllers,' right-click on your sound device and select 'Properties.' Under the 'Driver' tab, you should be able to read what driver is installed for your card, and if the sound card is working properly.
3. Check to see if the headphone jack works. If there is no sound coming out of your speakers, but the headphone jack plays sound, there may be something wrong with your speakers. If this is the case, you can either use headphones or external speakers, or attempt to use the laptop's warranty to get HP to fix the speakers. Plugging and unplugging a headphone from the jack several times has supposedly caused some users' speakers to start playing sound again.
4. Update your sound drivers. Even if the device says it is working properly, the driver might be causing a problem. From the menu in Step 2, select the option to automatically update the driver, or search the website of the sound card's manufacturer for a new driver to download and install. Restart your computer after the new driver is installed.
