How to Restore D Drive in Windows XP

1. Click the 'Start' button. Click 'Run' from the menu and type 'regedit' in the box. Press 'Enter.'
2. Click the 'arrow' or 'plus' sign next to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE' to expand this registry directory. Expand the 'System' directory folder and then 'CurrentControlSet.' Expand 'Control' and then the 'Class' directories to view a list of registry subkeys composed of 32 alpha-numeric characters.
3. Click once on this 'Class' registry subkey to select it: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. In the Registry Editor pane on the right, locate the 'UpperFilters' value. Right-click 'UpperFilters' and select 'Delete' from the menu. Click 'Yes' if a confirmation box appears asking if you are certain you want to delete the value. Locate the 'LowerFilters' value from the list. Right-click 'LowerFilters' and click 'Delete.' Click 'Yes' in the delete confirmation box.
4. Close the Registry Editor program. Click the 'Start' button, 'Turn off Computer' and select 'Restart' to restart your computer. Open 'My Computer' and look to see if the 'D:' drive appears. Insert a playable or readable disc into the drive and work with the disc as usual.
5. Re-install the CD/DVD drive drivers if the drive letter did not appear in 'My Computer' after you deleted the registry subkey values. Open the 'Control Panel' and click 'System and Maintenance.' Click 'System.' Select the 'Hardware' tab and click 'Device Manager' to open the utility. Locate the 'CD/DVD-ROM drives' listing and click the 'arrow' or 'plus' sign to expand it and view the name of the drive. Right-click the name of your CD/DVD drive and select 'Uninstall.' Click 'OK' in the confirmation box. Restart the computer to have the drivers automatically re-installed. Insert a disc into the CD/DVD drive to read or play it as usual.
