How to Fix an Error 1402


Adjusting Permissions To Resolve Error 1402
1. According to Microsoft, you will need to either log into your computer as a \'Computer administrator\' in order to resolve \'Error 1402\' or have a user with administrative privileges grant your user account with administrative powers.
2. Click on the \'Start\' button with your cursor, then click on \'Run.\'
3. Type in \'C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users\\Application Data\\Microsoft\\Office\\Data\\\' in the \'Open\' field box, then click the \'OK\' button with your cursor.
4. Click upon the \'Tools\' menu (which is located near the top of the window), then select and click on \'Folder Options\' with your cursor.
5. Click on the \'View\' tab. In the \'Advanced settings\' section, locate the \'Hidden files and folders\' section and click on the \'Show hidden files and folders\' option which will make all files visible in your window.
6. Clear or un-check the \'Hide extensions for known file types\' check box by clicking on it with your cursor.
7. Scroll down and locate the \'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)\' check box and clear or un-check on it with your cursor. Then click on the \'OK\' button.
8. Depending on which office program you are running, you will either see the \'Opa11.dat\' file or the \'Data.dat\' file. Right click on \'Opa11.dat\' or \'Data.dat\' file and select as well as click on the \'Properties\' menu.
9. Click on the \'Security\' tab and near the bottom of the window click on the \'Advanced\' button.
10. Click on the \'Permissions\' tab with your cursor. In the \'Permissions entries\' list, select \'Everyone\' and then click on the \'Edit\' button below.
11. Locate the \'Permissions\' section, then click on the \'Full Control\' check box with your cursor.
12. Click the \'OK\' button to close out the \'Permission Entry for opa11.dat\' window (or \'Permission for data.dat\' window). Then click on the \'OK\' button to close out the \'Advanced Security Settings for opa11.dat\' window (or the \'Advanced Security Settings for data.dat\' window).
13. Click on the \'OK\' button to close out the \'opa11.dat Properties\' window (or \'data.dat Properties\' window).
14. If you are still encountering \'Error 1402\' on your computer, then you will need to delete the \'Opa11.dat\' or \'Data.dat\' file, and restart your office program software. You may also have to restart your computer in a \'Clean Boot\' state to disable third party software from preventing you from installing (or modifying) the \'Opa11.dat\' or \'Data.dat\' file.

15. Click on the \'Start\' button, and then select and click on \'Run\' with your cursor.
16. In the \'Open\' field box, type in \'msconfig\' and then click on the \'OK\' button.
17. In the \'System Configuration Utility\' window, click on the \'General\' tab, then locate and click on the \'Selective Startup\' option.
18. Click or un-check the \'Process SYSTEM.INI File\' check box, the \'Process WIN.INI File\' check box and the \'Load Startup Items\' check box with your cursor.
19. Verify that the \'Load System Services\' check box is still checked and that the \'Use Original BOOT.INI\' option is still selected.
20. Select and click on the \'Services\' tab. Locate the \'Hide All Microsoft Services\' check box (near the bottom of the \'System Configuration Utility\' window) and click on the check box to select it.
21. Click on the \'Disable all\' button, then click the \'OK\' button. When prompted by your computer, click on the \'Restart\' button to restart your computer in a \'Clean Boot\' which will disable any third party software from preventing you from installing or modifying office software on your computer.
