Why Is My Laptop With Windows 7 Slow?
Background Programs
Programs that run in the background and start when you turn on the computer can slow the Windows 7 operating system down. Stop programs from beginning at computer startup by clicking on the 'Start' menu and selecting 'Run.'Once the dialog pops up, type in 'msconfig' and choose the 'Startup' tab. Uncheck any programs you don't want to start with Windows 7 and click 'Apply' and 'OK.'
Windows Registry
A cluttered Windows Registry is the most common culprit of a slow operating system. Although no internal Windows Registry cleaner utility exists, many are available on the market. Among the most popular are CCleaner, RegCure and Wise Cleaner (see Resources).
Spyware & Virus
Viruses and spyware can also impair speed. Sometimes, the only telltale sign of a virus is a slow running computer. Make sure your antivirus is current and updated. If not, download an antivirus program such as AVG, Avira or Avast (see Resources). Scan the computer with your antivirus software.
