How to Find a Windows XP License Number

1. Insert your original Windows XP CD in the computer's drive.
2. Open up Windows Explorer and access the CD drive (usually the 'd' or 'e' drive). When viewing the contents of the CD, navigate to the folder named 'i386'.
3. Locate the file named 'unattend.txt' and page down until you reach the final line. Your Windows XP product key should be located there. Write the number down and store it in a safe place.
4. Utilize third-party software to extract your product key from your Windows XP existing installation. (See link under Resources.) Choose one, run it and follow the on-screen instructions to pull your XP license number off a pre-existing installation.
5. Contact your computer manufacturer as a last-ditch attempt to locate a spare copy of your product ID.
