How to Copy Windows XP to a New Hard Disk Drive

1. Turn off your computer. Unplug the power cord and use a Phillips screwdriver to open the case. Install the new hard drive and connect it to the motherboard and to the power supply.
2. Plug the power cord back in and turn on the computer. In Windows, go to the 'Start' menu and select 'Control Panel.' Select 'Administrative tools' and then 'Computer Management.'
3. Click on the 'Disc Management' section of the left pane of the 'Computer Management' window. Your new drive will appear as 'Disc X,' where X is a number shown with a black bar in the lower right pane.
4. Right-click on the disc with the black bar and select 'New Partition.' Click 'Next' and select 'Primary partition.' Leave the size of the partition unchanged to use the whole hard drive as one partition. Click 'Next' and assign a drive letter. The drive letter you choose is unimportant.
5. Click 'Next' and make sure 'NTFS' is selected in the 'File system' drop-down menu. Click 'Finish' and let Windows format the new hard drive.
6. Go to the runtime website and download Shadow Copy.
7. Double-click on the 'shadowcopysetup.exe' file you just downloaded. Click 'Next' and select 'Yes, I agree with all the terms of this license agreement.' Press 'Next' four times to install Shadow Copy. Press 'Finish' when the installation process ends.
8. Go to the 'Start' menu and click on the 'Shadow Copy' icon.
9. Click on the folder icon at the end of the 'Copy From' line. Select your current hard drive, usually 'C:', and click 'OK.' Click on the folder icon at the end of the 'Copy To' line. Select the hard drive you just installed. Click 'OK.'
10. Let Shadow Copy clone your old hard drive onto the new one.
11. Turn off your computer when the copy is done. Unplug your old hard drive and plug the new hard drive in its place. Close your computer case by screwing it together with the Phillips screwdriver and re-plug the computer. Turn on the computer to boot from your new hard drive.
