An access violation error can occur during an automatic software updates for any one of the Windows operating systems released prior to Windows 7. The error message appears during the Svchost.exe process. This error has been fixed for Windows 7 and later versions of Windows.

The access violation occurs when you scan for updates by using the daily automatic schedule or when you go to the Microsoft Update website and scan for updates manually.
Prevention/Solution
Correcting the error is a two-step process. Go to the following Web address: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891, then download and install update 927891 for your version of Windows. Download is available for every version of Windows between 2000 and XP. Once the update is installed, on the same Web page, download Windows Update Installer 3.0 for your version of Windows.
