How to Troubleshoot a Shell32.Dll in VideoLAN

1. Download security update KB935448 from Microsoft's official website (see Resources for link).
2. Double-click the EXE file and follow the on-screen directions.
3. Run VLC Media Player. If the error disappears, ta-da; if not, continue to step 4.
4. Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and locate the file SHELL32.DLL.
5. Right-click on the file and select 'Copy.' Right-click on the Windows desktop and select 'Paste' (not 'Paste Shortcut').
6. Download a new copy of SHELL32.DLL from the Free Download section of DLL-Files.com (see Resources for link).
7. Move this new copy from your download folder into C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. You will be asked if you wish to overwrite the file; select 'Yes.'
8. From the Start menu, select 'Search,' then 'For Files or Folders.' Search for SHELL32.DLL. If any versions of the file exist anywhere except the one in the SYSTEM32 folder and the copy you placed on the desktop, delete them.
9. Run VLC Media Player. If the error disappears, delete the copy of SHELL32.DLL on your desktop. If it remains, move that copy into C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32, and select 'Yes' when asked to overwrite. Unfortunately, the problem lies somewhere else.
