How to Recover a Dell Computer Using Recovery Drive


Creating Recovery Media
1. Select the 'Dell Backup and Recovery' tile from the Start screen, or press 'Windows-Q' on the desktop, search for 'recovery,' and then choose 'Dell Backup and Recovery' from the results.
2. Select the 'Recovery Media' tile on the Welcome screen and then click 'Factory Backup.'
3. Insert a USB flash drive into the computer and then select the removable drive as the backup device. Click 'Continue.'
4. Click 'Start' and then click 'Yes' to create the factory image on the removable device. Click 'OK' when the backup completes.
Restore From a Backup
5. Connect the power adapter to the computer, if applicable. Press 'F2' when the Dell logo appears on-screen to go to the BIOS, and then use the directional pad to select the 'Boot' tab.
6. Highlight 'Secure Boot,' press 'Enter,' and then set the option to 'Disabled.' Press 'Enter' again.
7. Select 'Boot List Option' and change the option from 'UEFI' to 'Legacy' following the same process as above.
8. Connect your recovery drive to the computer. Press 'F10' and follow the prompts to save and quit.
9. Press 'F2' on the Dell logo screen to go to the UEFI menu. Select 'UEFI: USB Device' from the options and then press 'Enter.'
10. Click 'Run the Program From Your System Recovery USB Drive' and then click 'Next' until you reach the Restore Your Computer screen.
11. Select 'Factory Image' and then click 'Next.' Choose 'Factory Refresh' to restore data only on the system partition -- the segment of the hard drive where Windows 8 is installed; choose 'Factory Recovery' to delete all of the data on the drive and recover the OS. Click 'Next.'
12. Select 'Yes, Backup My Personal Files,' click 'Next,' and follow the on-screen prompts; or click 'No, Erase My Personal Files' and then click 'Next.'
13. Click 'Restart' when the 'Recovery Completed' message appears on-screen to complete the restoration of Windows 8.
