What Is Kbdcan.dll?
Keyboard Layouts
Keyboard layouts provide a mechanical keyboard setup for each language -- in other words, with certain characters corresponding to certain keys. Some languages use different characters for words that you will not find on a U.S. layout. The standard U.S. keyboard does not allow for a proper accent grave or caret on the face of the board. You can achieve these marks by hitting a series of keys, but that tends to be tedious if you are typing a letter. Since computers are international, Microsoft has layouts available to accommodate different languages.
Canadian Multilingual Standard Keyboard
Kbd files are part of the Canadian Multilingual Standard Keyboard feature available from Microsoft. This provides a keyboard layout that accommodates both English and French languages. This setup allows you to create distinctive French characters by hitting one or two keys. If you use a corresponding keyboard designed for this layout, you will see the markings on the front of the keyboard, as well. The file kbdcan.dll is part of the layout program that comes from Microsoft.
DLL Files
Kbdcan is a DLL file. This means it is a dynamic-link library file. DLL files are part of small batch programs that work in conjunction with an executable, or .exe, file. The .dll files fulfill a specific need for the program. For example, if an application needs to clear memory on the computer to run, it will call a .dll file to implement a smaller program to free the space. DLL files do not run on their own. If you see a task running with that extension, it was called by another application.
Considerations
If you have the wrong keyboard layout setup on your keyboard, you can change it. This may be the case if you are not producing the expected characters when you hit a key. To change it, type 'intl.cpl' in the search text box on the Windows 'Start' menu. Click on the 'Keyboards and Language' tab. You can select the proper keyboard layout there. There is no reason to delete the kdbcan.dll file. It is part of the Windows operating system and not a threat to your computer.
