How to Configure a Computer as a Gateway


1. Set-up the host computer. Note that the host computer needs two network adapters to act as a host. Connect an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the modem. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to one of the Ethernet ports on the host computer.
2. Set-up the client computer. Connect a second Ethernet cable to the other Ethernet port on the host computer. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the client computer.
3. Enable Internet connection sharing on the host computer. 'Click the 'Start' (Windows logo) button, then 'Control Panel' and then 'Network and Sharing Center.' Click 'Manage network connections' in the task pane to the upper left of the window. Right-click the network adapter you wish to share and select 'Properties' in the short-cut menu that appears. Next, click the 'Sharing' tab. Place a check mark in the box next to the words 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection.' Un-check the box next to the words 'Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection' and then click 'OK.' Close out of 'Network Connections' and 'Network and Sharing Center.'
4. Configure the client computer. Click the 'Start' (Windows logo) button, then 'Control Panel' and then 'Network and Sharing Center.' Click 'Manage network connections' in the task pane to the upper left of the window. Right-click the network adapter connected to the host computer and select 'Properties' in the short-cut menu that appears. Click 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP-IPv4)' and then click the 'Properties' button. Make sure the radio buttons next to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS Server address automatically' is selected. Click 'OK.'Click the 'Close' button on the 'Local Area Connection Properties' window. Close out of 'Network Connections' and 'Network and Sharing Center.'
5. Open a web browser on the client computer and connect to the Internet.
