How to Set Up a Dial
Setting up a Remote Access Server---Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista and Windows 7
1. Click the 'Start' button in the bottom-left corner of the screen of the first computer, then click 'Control Panel.' Double-click the 'Network Connections' icon. In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click the 'Start' button, click 'Control Panel', then click 'Network and Internet.'
2. Click 'Create A New Connection' in the left pane of the Network Connections window. Click the 'Next' button. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, select 'Network and Sharing Center,' click 'Manage Network Connections,' then click on the 'File' menu, select 'New Incoming Connection,' and skip to Step 5.
3. Click the radio button next to the 'Set up an advanced connection' option and click 'Next.' Select the 'Accept incoming connections' option and click 'Next.'
4. Check the checkbox next to your computer's modem, then click the 'Next' button. If you want to virtual private network (VPN) connects, choose the 'Allow virtual private connections' and then click 'Next.' Otherwise, select the 'Do not allow virtual private connection' option and click 'Next.'
5. Select the local user accounts for which you want to grant remote access. If you want to set up a new user name and password to log in, click the 'Add' button and type in the user name and password. This window specifies the user accounts that the connecting computer will use to log in. Click the 'Next' button when finished choosing or creating users. For Windows Vista and Windows 7, select or add users to the allowed users list, click 'Next,' then check the box next to 'Through a dial-up modem' and select the desired modem from the list. Click 'Finish.' This concludes the Windows Vista and Windows 7 remote access server setup.
6. Ensure that the 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks' checkbox has a check in it. Leave all other network software settings set to default and click the 'Next' button, then click 'Finish'.

7. Click the 'Start' button, then click the 'Control Panel' option on the computer that will connect to the computer you set up as a remote access server in Section 1. Double-click on the 'Network Connections' icon.
8. Click on the 'Create a new connection' option in the left pane of the Network Connections window. Click the 'Next' button. Select the 'Connect to the network at my workplace' option and click the 'Next' button. Select 'Dial-up connection' and click 'Next.'
9. Type in the name for your connection in the 'Company Name' text field. You can use any name you want to identify the connection. Click the 'Next' button. Type in the phone number of the phone line connected to the Remote Access Server computer in the 'Phone Number' text field and click the 'Next' button. Put a check mark in the checkbox next to 'Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop' and click 'Finish.'
10. Double-click the connection icon that was just created on your desktop. Type in the user name and password that you specified in Step 5 of Section 1.
11. Click the 'Connect' button. The computer will dial and connect to the remote access server computer, verify the user name and password, and form a dial-up network connection. The shared file folders on the remote access server are available to browse under 'My Network Places,' which you can reach by clicking the 'Start' button, clicking on 'My Computer, then selecting 'My Network Places' on the left side of the My Computer window.

12. Click the 'Start' button, then click 'Control Panel.'
13. Click on 'Network and Internet' and click on 'Network and Sharing Center.' Click on 'Set up a connection or network,' then select 'Connect to a workplace.'
14. Choose 'No, create a new connection,' then select 'Dial directly.' Enter the telephone number to which the remote access server is connected in the provided text area. Click 'Next' and type in your preferred connection name. Check the box next to 'Don't connect now; just set it up so I can connect later' and click 'Next.'
15. Type in your user name and password and check the 'Remember this password' option. Click the 'Connect' button to create the connection, then click 'Close.'
16. Click the 'Start' button and then click 'Connect To.' Select the connection you created in the previous steps and click 'Connect.' A dialog box will show the process of dialing, connecting and then verifying the user name and password.
